Radley & Wrigley

Tara Blake, Marketing Communications Officer Categories:

Radley maneuvers expertly in his wheelchair, having lost both his legs ten years ago to complications of diabetes. Radley is quick to joke, gregarious and upbeat. Originally from Iowa, he is first and foremost a Chicago Cubs fan, but also loves the San Francisco Giants.

Radley’s family lives far from the Bay Area, so he and his loveable three-legged dog, Wrigley, keep each other company. Radley is filled with wonderful tales, spun from his experiences as a personal butler at an upscale San Francisco hotel, having rubbed elbows with celebrities like Robert DeNiro and Anne Bancroft.

Radley is also a gifted artist whose bold and colorful acrylic paintings have been exhibited at several galleries over the years. As a client of Project Open Hand’s grocery center, he happily makes meals at home, and is especially fond of the salmon and ravioli he gets on his weekly visits to stock up his pantry. He adds our fresh greens and veggies to make for a well-balanced meal.

“It’s great to know there are people who care about those who are less fortunate,” Radley says. “There’s a lot of folks out here who need help.”

With the guidance of Project Open Hand’s nutritionists and careful dietary choices, Radley has seen consistent improvement in his blood glucose levels since becoming a client – which in turn helps improve his outlook on life. Being able to rely on Project Open Hand for weekly groceries helps Radley save much needed funds in his tight budget.
